Blending technology and artistry, beautiful smiles are created with minimal time and discomfort. Dr. Schope provides a Smile Enhancement Evaluation to all her patients. She would love to enhance the beauty of your unique smile.
If you elect to explore your possibilities for a smile enhancement, it will begin with a thorough diagnosis of your wishes and how that will work in your mouth. Dr. Schope evaluates the function of the joints, muscles and teeth using working models of your mouth. When the joints, muscles and teeth work in harmony, whatever cosmetic care you elect will have the best opportunity to look good, feel good and last a long time.
Additionally, if your cosmetic dentistry includes care from other dental specialists (i.e., orthodontists, periodontists), Dr. Schope serves as your coordinating dental care provider and can refer you to a trusted specialist. That specialist will often perform a very specialized procedure which may be a one-time event or last several months or years. Throughout your care, you’ll still visit Dr. Schope for your overall general and cosmetic dentistry.
Available cosmetic dentistry procedures
When it comes to choosing a procedure, Dr. Betty Jo Schope, a highly-trained, experienced, and respected cosmetic dentist, will sit down with you, discuss your cosmetic goals, and determine a best course of action based upon your current condition. Any one or several of the following cosmetic dentistry procedures may be recommended:
To get that beautiful and clean smile, there are many ways. Teeth whitening and bleaching are two dental procedures to whiten your teeth effectively. Dentists use whitening toothpastes and other cleaning products to remove many surface stains on your teeth. In addition, dentists sometimes use light-activated whitening techniques to bleach teeth in order to remove yellow and black stains from the teeth surface. However, bleaching procedures always change the natural color of your teeth. The shade after whitening and bleaching is usually five to seven shades brighter. Read more about whitening and bleaching:
Those with gaps within tooth and improper teeth alignment can opt for dental veneers. Dentists use thin shells of porcelain to bond to the front of the teeth. This will, in turn, offer a natural and attractive look. This procedure is to correct misaligned teeth and chipped teeth. This is the best treatment to correct abnormally spaced teeth. Usually, cosmetic dental surgeons use two most common materials for this purpose. Composite resin and porcelain are the commonly used materials as dental veneers. After checking the teeth, dental technicians fabricate the materials in a dental laboratory to bond to the teeth with the help of resin cement. Read more about veneers:
Laser gum re-contouring for the ‘gummy smile’
Laser gum re-contouring is another cosmetic dental procedure often done to correct that gummy smile. This procedure helps reducing the length of the gums by balancing gum tissues to match the shape and size of the upper lip. The correction of gum is to offer a beautiful and natural smile to the individual. Several options of laser procedure, including soft tissue diode laser is done to correct that gummy smile. This is a safe and painless procedure. As there will be no bleeding, the chance of infection in this dental procedure is minimal. Cosmetic surgeons can dramatically alter your gum line and give you a beautiful and confident smile. Read more about laser gum re-contouring:
Cosmetic dentists now use a composite filling, which is a mixture of a tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture, to fill the holes on the decayed teeth. These fillings are ideal for reshaping and changing the color of disfigured teeth with cavities. During the procedure, dentists usually place the composites in layers by using a light specialized process in order to harden each layer. Later, the dentist polishes the composite to avoid staining. Those with missing and chipped teeth can always opt for cosmetic dental implants. Dentists use a medical grade crown or titanium implant fixture to place a permanent crown on the implant. This procedure gives your teeth a natural look and feel. Dental implants, however, are successful, long lasting, and effective solution available. While we don’t actually perform the actual dental implants procedure at Schope Dental, we do design the overall cosmetic plan for you which then includes coordinated care with the appropriate dental professional, such as a periodontist. In this case, dentists place a tooth-shaped cap over a tooth to restore its shape, look, and size. This procedure is often done to improve the appearance of the tooth. Dentists usually cement the crown into place to fully cover the entire visible portion of the tooth that lies above the gum line. You have the option to choose temporary or permanent crowns based on your choice. Ceramic, porcelain, and stainless steel crowns are some of the popular varieties of permanent crowns.
ONE-DAY CROWNS: At Schope Dental, we use an effective and safe technology called CEREC/CADCAM to build and place your crown in the same day! This saves you the time and inconvenience of making multiple trips. Read more about using crowns for cosmetic dentistry:
Those with gaps between teeth can opt for dental bridges. Dentists often use bridges to fill the gap created by a missing tooth. A bridge is a combination of false teeth alloys, made from gold, porcelain, or alloys. Dental bridges are placed in such a way that natural or implanted teeth support these. The newest and most popular procedure in modern cosmetic dentistry is the smile makeover. To improve the smile and appearance of your teeth, you can opt for this procedure. Your cosmetic dentist will check and advise you to use dental veneers, tooth implants, composite bonding, and teeth whitening in order to have a complete smile makeover.

“Cosmetic dentistry – when I think of that is I think of anybody that wants to enhance their smile in any way. It can be something as little as just lightening their teeth. Maybe they are happy with the way their smile looks but they just would like it brighter. So, doing different lightening procedures is something that we have available. We can have the whole spectrum of somebody who just really doesn’t like their smile at all. You know, they have broken and sharp edges on their teeth. Their smile just doesn’t look youthful anymore.
And those are the patients where we can actually do a comprehensive smile enhancement. We do that quite often. One of the things that I would ask patients that are looking for that is that they would definitely go to a provider that isn’t just looking at being able to replace what was there before and giving a youthful smile. They need to really study and be a master of studying the bite relationship and how the mouth functions so that we are not creating, by not going back and studying how the mouth works, whether or not any restorations (say veneers), mouth works, whether or not any restorations, say veneers.
Veneers is a common thing people hear. I would like to get some veneers. You know I don’t like the way my teeth look. Veneers are great. We can have an instant great smile and great shade and shape of teeth. But those veneers need to be able to function properly with the joints and the muscles and the rest of the teeth to be able to last a long time.
So, if we are not designing those or studying that bite and then designing those veneers into that bite relationship, or maybe not correcting some bad bite relationships before, then we can’t expect those veneers to hold up any better than what the natural teeth did. People want to look good and feel good and they want their mouth to feel that way. When veneers and crowns that are done for cosmetic dentistry are done in a way that are looking at function, you are going to get the result that is going to look good, feel good and last a lot longer. So those are some of the things that we provide as far as cosmetic dentistry.
One of the other things that we do is that people have the larger silver fillings and they don’t like the way those look and we can very easily replace those with tooth-colored fillings. We have the ability with our Cadcam or CEREC dentistry to be able to replace those fillings with just beautiful restorations the same day. They can be cemented in and just are gorgeous. They can be cemented in and just are gorgeous. It is a really nice adjunct to the cosmetic dentistry that we provide here. Even just as far as closing some spaces.
I had a young guy that was just a beautiful young man, just hasn’t grown up quite enough yet to be able to do some cosmetic dentistry that we wanted to do but his teeth grew in small. He had a situation where he had a lot, a lot of space between his teeth. We were able to create with some composite bonding, a beautiful smile where he changed from looking like he was a pre-teen to the age he really is where he is ready to go and get his high school pictures taken. Because he wasn’t old enough to get the more advanced dentistry done that he’ll probably have done but this is going to be a great thing to transition him to where he is old enough. So bonding can close spaces between teeth. So those are some of the cosmetic dentistry things that we provide here. Typically not.
Most things that we do can really have patients be very comfortable. We kind of blend the artistry that I love about dentistry – it’s one of my favorite things to do – because you get really create beauty in someone’s own unique smile. It is like we can create just the perfect Hollywood smile or we can really make a patient’s mouth that they worry about that they are not going to look like themselves if they do too much cosmetic dentistry. Will I look right? Will people be able to tell if it’s fake or not? What we can do is really enhance a smile that looks perfect in a patient’s mouth by just designing it properly.
It doesn’t have to be painful. We do a lot of things to have our patients be comfortable and I have a lot of patients referred to me because they need to go to somebody that is gentle. I have a lot of patients that are phobic patients that a lot of specialists refer to me for that. The cosmetic dentistry I wouldn’t say is something that I would expect a patient to say would be an uncomfortable or painful thing.”
